Google Review Defamation: When a False Review Goes Too Far
Google review defamation is a review that states something false as fact and harms your business, such as claiming you committed fraud or failed an inspection you passed. Some of these reviews also break Google's policies and can be reported. Others need a legal request.
You pay only if the review is removed. Your price is confirmed in writing before any work starts.

Opinion or false statement of fact
"The food was awful" is an opinion, and it's protected. "They served me expired meat and got shut down last month" is a factual claim that can be checked.
Online defamation generally needs three things:
- A statement presented as fact, not as personal opinion
- The statement is false, and you can show it
- It harms your business's reputation
What Google can remove without a court
Many defamatory reviews also break Google's content rules, for example when the writer was never a customer. We report those through Google's own tools first.
Google also accepts legal removal requests for content that may be unlawful, and decides each one.
If the reviewer was never a customer, the faster route is usually Remove Fake Google Reviews.
Insults, threats or slurs, rather than false facts, fall under Google's harassment rules: Google Review Harassment Aimed at You or Your Staff.
When to talk to an internet defamation lawyer
We are not a law firm and don't give legal advice. When a case needs legal work, it is handled by a licensed attorney.
The legal route tends to make sense when:
- Google has declined the report and the appeal
- The claim is serious, such as a crime, a health risk or a license problem
- You can prove the statement is false
It takes longer and costs more than a policy report, and a judge or the platform makes the final call.
What a lawyer needs from you
- Screenshots of the review with the date and reviewer name visible
- Records that show the claim is false
- Any sign of lost business since then
- Your report to Google and its answer
How we handle every review
You pay only if the review is removed
If the review stays up, you owe nothing for that review.
The platform makes the final call
Google and every other platform decide what comes down under their own rules. We prepare the strongest request those rules allow, and no one can promise a removal.
Legitimate routes only
Policy reports, appeals, legal requests when a review may be unlawful, and a public response when a review has to stay. No fake accounts, no mass flagging and no fake reviews.
Cost of the policy route
Your price is confirmed in writing before any work starts
The written quote lists what is included and what is not.
You pay only if the review is removed. Attorney fees, if any, are agreed separately with the attorney.
Questions about defamatory reviews
Can you sue for a bad review?
A negative opinion generally isn't grounds for a lawsuit. A false statement of fact that harms your business may be, and only an attorney can assess your case.
Can I sue Google over the review?
Generally no. Federal law largely shields platforms from liability for what users post, so claims are usually aimed at the reviewer.
